Miscarriage
Miscarriage, referred to medically as a spontaneous abortion, leaves the parents devastated.
Most of the time there is no obvious cause for the child to stop growing in the womb and die.
The death of this much anticipated family member cannot be treated lightly. When a miscarriage occurs all dreams seem shattered, all seems lost. As one woman said 'there was no life in my eyes anymore.'
Perhaps, when the initial grieving has lessened, you will take a few minutes to consider the following:
- First of all, this child is alive with the Lord. This child is dead in the eyes of this world, but not in God's eternal plan.
- The Lord created this child to be unique, special, to bring love.
- He chose you to be the parents of this dear child. What an awesome blessing!
- He did not promise how long this child would live.
- He does promise that you will spend eternity with your child.
A woman, with whom we met, was having a very hard time because she wanted to hold her miscarried babies in her arms. We talked about the fact that she realized that in reality she could not do this - and she agreed it was not possible. She could always hold them in her heart.
Following the Mass of Consolation in 2007, we asked her to take the rock on which she had painted her child's name and to place it on the altar before the Blessed Sacrament. She told the Lord the immense ache in her heart and how she hated to be separated from her children.
She then prayerfully gave her children over to the loving care of God asking him to hold them close trusting he would care for them until they meet in heaven. She did so, and found that it was her holding on that was creating her pain. The letting go and letting God helped to ease her pain.
